Tamil Nadu CM Nammai Kaakkum 48 Scheme – Free Treatment for Road Accident Victims

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K Stalin launches Nammai Kaakkum 48 Scheme 2021 for free treatment to road accident victims in first 48 hours. Under Tamilnadu CM Accident Victim Treatment Scheme 2021, govt. will provide free care to road accident victims in 609 government and private hospitals. Tamilnadu government will offer free 81 life-saving procedures worth Rs. 1 lakh to accident victims in the first 48 hours of their hospitalisation at 609 empaneled government and private hospitals in the state. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Nammai Kaakkum 48 Scheme also covers those from other states and countries. The Nammai Kaakkum 48 scheme (saving our lives in 48 hours) announced on 18 November 2021 will be offered to all road accident victims for a year. It will be dovetailed with the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme next year after review.

Officials said TN Chief Minister Nammai Kaakkum 48 scheme will cover all those who don’t have insurance. The state has set aside Rs. 50 crore for the first phase of implementation of the Innuyir Kaappom Thittam (saving precious lives). The procedures performed under the new scheme are not included in the current state insurance scheme. After chief minister MK Stalin’s review meeting on road safety with ministers and officials on 18 Nov, the government announced a comprehensive policy including legislation of emergency medical services and setting up a road safety authority.

Tamilnadu Medical Emergencies Act to be Framed

The TN state govt. will frame a Medical Emergencies Act that will focus on 5 elements namely emergency response, rescue and resuscitation, damage control surgeries, bring people back to normalcy and rehabilitation. The idea is to empower more people to help road accident victims, create awareness, set protocols and bring in standard of care.

Tamilnadu govt. will create emergency codes and detail things to be done in the act. The state would involve students from schools, colleges, NGOs, and members of the public to convert road safety into a people’s movement. The state will also set up a road safety authority that will offer administrative and financial support to implement road safety policies, maintain registry, research on causes for prevention of accidents and monitor road design and quality.
